At the time, Nintendo dominated the gaming market with the NES. Sega needed more than strong hardware to compete. It needed a clear identity and a way to grab attention in a market that many consumers already associated with Nintendo.

The Genesis Does What Nintendon’t campaign became that strategy. It framed Sega as the rebellious challenger and turned the battle between Sega and Nintendo into one of the most famous rivalries in entertainment history.

In the late 1980s, Nintendo controlled most of the home console market in North America. The NES had revived the video game industry after the crash of 1983 and quickly became the most recognizable gaming brand in the world.

Retailers trusted Nintendo products, developers relied on Nintendo’s licensing system, and consumers often referred to video games simply as “Nintendo.” For Sega, entering this market was extremely difficult.

Before the Genesis, Sega had already attempted to compete with the Master System. While technically capable, it struggled to gain traction in the United States because Nintendo’s influence over developers and retailers was so strong.

Sega realized it could not beat Nintendo by copying Nintendo’s strategy. Instead, it decided to position itself as the opposite of Nintendo.

What “Genesis Does What Nintendon’t” Meant

The phrase Genesis Does What Nintendon’t suggested that Sega’s console offered something Nintendo could not.

On a technical level, the message highlighted the Genesis’ 16-bit processor, which allowed more advanced graphics and faster gameplay compared to the NES. Sega often emphasized that its system delivered arcade-style gaming at home, something many players wanted during the late 1980s.

However, the slogan was not just about technology. It was also about identity.

Nintendo’s image focused on family-friendly games and younger audiences. Sega chose a different direction. The Genesis was marketed as a console for teenagers and older players who wanted faster action and edgier experiences.

This contrast helped Sega stand out in a crowded market.

Did the Campaign Actually Work?

For several years, the strategy proved highly effective.

The Genesis gained significant momentum in North America and eventually captured a large share of the market. At its peak in the early 1990s, Sega briefly led the console market in the United States.

The system ultimately sold around 30 million units worldwide, a major achievement considering Nintendo’s earlier dominance.

More importantly, the campaign changed how video games were marketed. Companies realized that branding and cultural identity could be just as important as hardware specifications.

Today, Genesis Does What Nintendon’t is still remembered as one of the most iconic slogans in gaming history. The campaign demonstrated that a challenger brand could disrupt a dominant competitor through bold messaging and clear positioning.

1. Nintendo World Championships 1990 Cartridge (NES)

   

   The Nintendo World Championships 1990 cartridge is one of the rarest and most valuable NES games ever made. Created for a nationwide gaming competition held by Nintendo in 1990, the cartridge includes timed challenges from Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris. Players had 6 minutes and 21 seconds to complete all three games, with scores calculated using a special formula. Two versions of the cartridge were produced: a grey version (about 90 made) given to competition finalists, and an ultra-rare gold version (only 26 made) awarded through a Nintendo Power magazine contest. 2. Panasonic Q (GameCube Hybrid)

3. Commodore 65 (C65) Prototype

   

   The Commodore 65, also known as the C65, was an unreleased successor to the iconic Commodore 64, developed in the early 1990s. Intended to be backward compatible with the C64 while offering a major performance boost, it featured a 3.5MHz 4510 CPU, 128KB of RAM, and significantly enhanced graphics and sound capabilities. However, Commodore’s worsening financial situation led to the project’s cancellation before it reached mass production. Only an estimated 50 to 200 working engineering prototypes were ever built, making the C65 one of the rarest personal computers in existence.    The Nintendo Super Famicom Sharp SF1 TV was a rare Japan-only release from 1990 that combined a Super Famicom console with a 14-inch CRT television in a single unit. This unique collaboration between Nintendo and Sharp featured side-mounted controller ports, custom sound integration, and a sleek, compact design tailored for space-conscious Japanese homes. The LaserActive itself is uncommon, but the real grails are the specific "PAC" modules that allowed it to play Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and *TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine* games (and their CD add-ons). hese PACs were essentially full consoles built into expansion cartridges and were sold separately for a staggering $600 to $800 each in the early 1990s. The LaserActive’s base system alone cost over $1,000, making it prohibitively expensive for most consumers and ultimately a commercial failure. The crash of 1983 had left retailers cold. Video games were seen as a fad. The shelves were already full of junk. So Nintendo changed the pitch. This wasn’t just a game system. It was a toy. A high-tech machine. It came with a light gun, a puzzle game, and a plastic robot.

His name was R.O.B.

R.O.B. looked futuristic. He had glowing eyes. He moved slowly. He reacted to flashes of light from the screen. But he wasn’t very good at his job. He only worked with two games, and even then, barely. But that wasn’t the point.

The point was to get the NES into stores.
And R.O.B. got it there.

At launch, the NES was sold in a “Deluxe Set.” It came with the console, two controllers, the Zapper light gun, Duck Hunt, Gyromite, and the real star of the package—R.O.B. Super Mario Bros. wasn’t part of the set. Nintendo wasn’t trying to sell games. They were trying to sell a toy.

Gail Tilden, Nintendo’s head of marketing in the U.S., understood the problem. The word “video game” was toxic after the crash of 1983. So she led with R.O.B.—a robot helper, something kids had never seen before. She helped reframe the NES as an advanced toy, not a console. It was a deliberate move, right down to the terminology: entertainment system, not game system.

Retailers were still unsure, so Nintendo made them an offer they couldn’t refuse. Sears, Macy’s, and other big stores agreed to stock the NES Deluxe Set for a 90-day trial. No money up front. Nintendo would cover displays, promotions, and take back any unsold units. It was all risk for Nintendo, zero for the stores.

It worked. R.O.B. got the system on shelves. Once it was there, and kids got their hands on it, word spread fast.

The robot’s full name was “Robotic Operating Buddy.” In Japan, he was known simply as the Family Computer Robot. For the U.S. launch, they gave him a new name and a makeover—gray and black to match the NES. There was even talk of calling him “OTTO,” a play on the word “auto,” but R.O.B. stuck.

He was everywhere. TV commercials. Store kiosks. Box art. Early promo materials never even mentioned video games. The strategy was clear: R.O.B. was the disguise. The NES was the real payload.

He didn’t have to be great. He just had to get through the door.

Gyromite was one of the two games built for him. It came with gyros, trays, and claws. You had to point R.O.B. at the screen, run a test, and set him up just right. The idea was to help a scientist character avoid bombs by raising and lowering red and blue pillars. R.O.B. would slowly move the gyros to press buttons on a second controller.

It was awkward. But as a gimmick, it was gold.

Stack-Up was the other game. Fewer people remember it. It involved rearranging blocks to match a pattern on screen. It was harder to find, less fun to use, and didn’t leave much of a mark.

R.O.B. was really just a gimmick. It helped convince retailers that the NES wasn’t another video game system. It was something new. A toy. It also got kids excited. In one early study, a market research group found that out of 200 people who bought the NES, most of them said they bought it because of the robot.

But soon after launch, most games stopped using R.O.B. There were no follow-ups. No new games. But that didn’t matter. Players were too busy with Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, and everything else the NES had to offer. R.O.B. just ended up sitting in the closet.

Still, the robot stuck around. He showed up in a few Nintendo games over the years. He even became a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros.

Some people call R.O.B. a failure. But really, he did exactly what Nintendo needed. He kept the NES from being labeled a video game and ignored by stores. Once the system was in your house, the robot could fade away and no one cared.

Not bad for a toy with a light sensor, a couple of motors, and some plastic parts.

Nintendo launched an aggressive $50 million marketing campaign in 2003. The slogan was simple: "Who are you?"
It was a shift in tone. A move from mascots to mood.

“This is not about changing who we are,” said George Harrison, Senior VP of Marketing and Corporate Communications.
“Nintendo has been and always will be about making great video games for all ages. This campaign simply enables us to speak with one unified voice.”

The goal? To spotlight the emotional connection between player and game.
From Samus to Donkey Kong. Zelda to Mario. It wasn’t about characters anymore. It was about you.

“Nintendo permanently established video games as a key element of popular culture,” Harrison said.
“And ‘Who Are You?’ embodies the emotional connection players have with their favorite games and characters.”

“This campaign celebrates what makes Nintendo unique — the fact that we offer the widest range of personalities through which you can unleash your other self … your game self.”

The campaign ran everywhere:
30-sheet billboards in major cities.
Transit ads. Mall banners. In-store displays.
Print. Cinema.

The highlight was a 60-second cinema spot, described by Nintendo as one of its most ambitious marketing efforts ever.

It premiered in over 10,000 U.S. theaters on October 30, 2003, before films like The Matrix Revolutions and The Cat in the Hat.

This was Nintendo at its most conceptual.

Sony had been working on the PocketStation since 1997. Internally, they called it “Memory Card with LCD.” Eventually it got a real name and a full release, but only in Japan. Sony said the demand was too high to release it anywhere else, but the truth is, it was probably too weird for the U.S. market. It wasn’t something you needed to play your games. It was more like a bonus device—extra, optional, and a little hard to explain.

It worked like a normal memory card. You could save your progress and plug it into either slot on the front of your PlayStation. But if you were playing a game that supported it, you could download a mini-game or companion app onto the PocketStation. Then you could unplug it and keep playing on the go.

The PocketStation had no backlight. The screen was small and simple, more like a calculator than a Game Boy. You used the buttons to scroll through menus or play short games. It ran on a single CR2032 battery, and if that battery died, you could lose your saved game or mini-game data. It also had infrared so you could trade data with another PocketStation—but that was about the extent of its wireless abilities. No syncing to a PC. No online connection. Just console and card.

Over 100 PlayStation games supported the PocketStation in some way. Some just used it to unlock extra items. Others gave you full games.

The most famous example was Final Fantasy VIII. The Japanese version came with a mini-game called Chocobo World. You raised a chocobo, leveled it up, and then sent it back into the main game to help you during battles. The U.S. version completely removed this feature.

Metal Gear Solid: Integral included downloadable VR missions. Street Fighter Alpha 3 had PocketStation-only fighters and game modes. Crash Bandicoot 3 let you unlock secret content. And Dokodemo Issho, a life sim featuring a cat named Toro, was one of the system’s best-known titles. Toro even became a Sony mascot in Japan—he’s still around today.

These weren’t just gimmicks. Some games gave real rewards or bonuses for using the PocketStation. If you didn’t have one, you missed out.

Sony claimed demand was too high in Japan to manufacture enough for the global market. But that’s probably not the whole truth. The PocketStation was strange. It didn’t make sense to a lot of players. Most games didn’t require it. Explaining why someone should buy a memory card with a screen wasn’t easy—especially when memory cards were already expensive on their own.

By the time interest started to dip, it was already too late. The PlayStation 2 was on the horizon, and Sony had other things to focus on.

Still, the PocketStation sold over five million units in Japan. That’s not a failure.

Sony officially discontinued the PocketStation in 2002. By then, support from developers had already dropped off. The device still worked as a regular memory card, but most of the mini-games were no longer relevant. No new releases. No updates. No new support.

In 2013, Sony brought it back briefly as a digital app for the PS Vita. You could play some old PocketStation content if you had compatible games. It was mostly just for nostalgia. The app was shut down in 2015.

The PocketStation didn’t fail. It was just too early. Too weird. But it helped shape where gaming would go. It was one of the first examples of second-screen gameplay. You could take part of your console game with you—train a character, find items, then return to your system and use the results. Today, that’s normal. We do it on phones, Switch consoles, and through cloud saves.

Sony kept trying this idea for years—using the PSP and Vita to connect with home consoles. But the PocketStation did it first.

It also helped people see that game saves could be more than just static files. They could be active. They could change. They could be part of the game world, even when the console was off.

You can still buy PocketStations on sites like eBay. Many are yellowed. Some don’t work. A few still do. You’ll need a Japanese PlayStation game to use it properly. Most of those are long out of print. But if you find one, you get a tiny piece of gaming history.

The PocketStation was strange. Optional. Limited. But it was also ahead of its time. It let you take your games with you before that was a standard idea. It let you trade data. It gave you hidden extras.

Not many people talk about it now. But it deserves to be remembered—because it helped create the path for portable and connected gaming. And for a moment, in 1999, a memory card became something more.

They wanted you to play games with your mind.

That was the pitch behind the Atari Mindlink. It looked like a plastic headband. You wore it across your forehead like a sweatband from a sci-fi gym. It didn’t actually read your thoughts—but that’s what the marketing hinted at. What it did read were the small electrical signals in your forehead muscles, picked up through sensors. So when you tensed or moved your eyebrows, those signals triggered controls in the game.

That was the theory.

The Mindlink was designed for the Atari 2600. It would have connected through the standard joystick port. The idea was to give players a “hands-free” gaming experience, something nobody had tried before. You could sit still, raise one eyebrow slightly, and control what was happening on screen.

In 1984, Atari showed off the Mindlink at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago. They had built three games for it.

The first was Bionic Breakthrough. It was like Breakout, but instead of moving a paddle with a joystick, you did it with your eyebrows. You could tilt the paddle left or right by flexing your muscles a certain way.

The second was Telepathy. It was a basic “psychic training” game. Shapes or symbols would appear on screen, and you had to match or anticipate them. The controls were still eyebrow-based, but it was wrapped in a theme of mind-reading.

The third was Mind Maze, a simple logic puzzle game. It used headband input to select answers or navigate menus.

They were never released.

The hardware didn’t work as well as it needed to. For most people, it was hard to control. You had to learn which muscles to move, and even then, it wasn’t precise. Testing showed that people got headaches from using it for too long. The forehead sensors needed constant, careful placement. And the results weren’t consistent. If the band shifted even a little, the game might stop responding.

The idea sounded futuristic, but the tech wasn’t ready.

And the timing couldn’t have been worse.

In 1983, the video game market crashed. Atari, once worth billions, started losing money fast. Too many bad games. Too many rushed products. Confidence in the market dropped. Shelves were full of unsold cartridges. And parents who bought consoles just months earlier weren’t buying more.

Then came Jack Tramiel.

In 1984, Warner sold Atari’s home division to Tramiel, the founder of Commodore. He had made the Commodore 64 and was focused on computers, not risky side projects. When he came in, he cut costs fast. Anything that wasn’t essential got scrapped. The Mindlink was one of the first things to go.

Atari never made a formal announcement. The Mindlink wasn’t canceled in public—it just vanished. No games were released for it. No final version was produced. And very few prototypes survived.

Only a handful of units are known to exist. One is held by the National Videogame Museum in Texas. Another has surfaced in online collector circles. They don’t work well today, and most of the games built for it are lost or incomplete.

Despite all that, the Mindlink has become a strange kind of legend.

Not because it worked.

But because it dared to ask: what if we didn’t need hands at all?

In a way, it predicted something important. Today, we have brain-computer interfaces that do exactly what the Mindlink pretended to do. Elon Musk’s Neuralink isn’t a game controller, but it does let people move cursors or type using brain signals. Medical companies now develop headsets that let people with paralysis control devices just by thinking.

The Mindlink didn’t invent any of that. But it imagined the future—before the technology caught up.

There’s also another angle to this story: marketing.

The Mindlink may not have worked, but the ads almost convinced you it did. Atari was going to market it like a new frontier of gaming. “Play with your mind.” Simple slogans. Big ideas. No real explanation.

There were no YouTube reviews. No early access. No Reddit threads tearing it down. Just printed ads and magazine spreads with dramatic photos and short promises.

That’s how it used to be.

And somehow, it felt more exciting.

The Mindlink never made it to store shelves. But it left a strange legacy.

It’s one of the first times a company tried to change how we interact with games in a big way. It failed. But that’s what happens when you try something new.

Most people don’t talk about it now. You won’t find it on top 10 lists or gaming retrospectives. But it was there—for a moment—pointing toward a future that, slowly, is starting to happen.

Then the Fairchild Channel F came out.

It launched in 1976. It was the first home video game console that let you play different games using cartridges. It came out almost a year before the Atari 2600, but most people have never heard of it.

The “F” in Channel F stood for “fun.” The idea was simple. One machine, many games. Plug in a cartridge and play. Take it out and try another. It’s how most consoles work now. But in 1976, that idea was brand new.

At the heart of the system was the Fairchild F8 microprocessor, designed by Robert Noyce and his team — some of the same minds who would later help form Intel.

The F8 gave the Channel F enough computing power to:

• Track scores

• Control game logic

• Let players take turns

• Run simple AI routines

This made it far more dynamic than earlier systems, allowing for deeper gameplay beyond a few dots bouncing on a screen.

Games were sold on "Videocarts", each brightly colored and labeled. Titles were mostly simple: Pong clones, shooting galleries, card games, and basic sports. In total, 26 official cartridges were released.

Though it never achieved massive success, the Channel F paved the way for cartridge-based gaming and helped shape the early home console market.

The Channel F’s controller was unusual — a long, cylindrical joystick that could:

• Move in 8 directions

• Be pushed down like a button

• Be twisted left or right for paddle-like control

No action buttons. Instead, everything was handled with this one multifunctional stick. Though not very ergonomic, it was a clever piece of engineering that allowed for multiple control styles in a single device.

The Fairchild Channel F is rarely mentioned in retro gaming lists or documentaries, but its impact is huge. It was the first console to use game cartridges, the first to run on a microprocessor, and one of the earliest to support turn-based multiplayer. It also introduced features like a pause button and basic AI behavior. These ideas became standard in the years that followed.

Today, the Fairchild Channel F is a collector’s item. Its yellow cartridges and bulky controllers are a snapshot of gaming before it became a billion-dollar industry.

So next time you pop in a cartridge, load a game, or switch to a new title on your console — take a moment to remember the console that started it all, even if almost no one talks about it.

SNK released the system first in Japan, then in North America and Europe shortly after. It supported a color screen with no backlight, 40-hour battery life on just two AA batteries, and a minimalist UI with a built-in calendar and alarm—features that felt oddly ahead of their time.

Despite strong early reviews, the system struggled commercially. By 2000, SNK was in financial freefall, and support for the Pocket Color began drying up.

Production stopped in 2001.

The Neo Geo Pocket Color is now a cult collectible. Its small but polished library and unique input style give it a distinct place in handheld history.

In recent years, digital ports of key titles have appeared on modern platforms—preserving SNK’s handheld legacy for new generations.
